Sitting in comfortable armchairs with the floor-to-ceiling glass walls wide open, a gentle breeze blows through the suite. In front of us sits the deck – shaped like the bow of a boat – just 5 metres above the sea, and a wide swatch of glistening ocean and distant views of the US Olympic Peninsula spreads before us.

SOOKEPOINT OFFERS A QUIET ESCAPE ON VANCOUVER ISLAND
The city of Sooke and SookePoint is located on the southernmost tip of Vancouver Island less than an hour’s drive from Victoria, British Columbia. Sooke’s town motto is “Where the Rainforest Meets the Sea.” The tagline speaks to the volumes of environmental riches in the area. Whether you are looking for quiet solitude or exciting outdoor adventures, these towns offer it all.
OUR SOOKE ADVENTURE
After landing in Victoria, picking up our rental car from National and making our way along the winding roads to Sooke, where my in-laws live, we decided to venture down to Whiffin Spit. It’s not far from my in-laws’ house and this would be my son’s first-ever chance to see the ocean. My husband and I have been to Whiffin Spit before, on previous visits with his parents, but my son, who is four, had been talking non-stop about seeing the ocean and collecting seashells.
THINGS TO DO IN VICTORIA AND VANCOUVER ISLAND
British colonial energy with an island charm sets Victoria, British Columbia apart from any other city in North America. With nature at your doorstep, coastal temperate rainforests aplenty, raw and rugged Pacific coastline teaming with year-round life, and urban fixes such as nightlife, spas, local and sustainable culinary, and luxury oceanfront accommodation, you’ll surely have more things to do in Greater Victoria and Vancouver Island than you’ll have time for.

A LUXURIOUS MARITIME WEEKEND IN SOOKE
This summer, my friend Lucienne and I escaped smog-blanketed Vancouver for a few days in Vancouver Island’s seaside town of Sooke. Our journey began early on a Friday morning in July as we set off for Tsawwassen ferry terminal in our forest green hybrid Honda Clarity. A beautiful and blustery hour-and-a-half BC Ferries trip to Swartz Bay, and an hour drive along island highways brought us to the quaint town of Sooke (pop. 13,000). Here we stocked up on provisions, plotting the meals we would prepare in the fully equipped kitchen that awaited us in our luxury suite at SookePoint Ocean Cottage Resort.
LONG WEEKEND, LOW SEASON GETAWAYS
Although Labor Day is considered the last great weekend of summer, it’s not the last great weekend to getaway. Sure, you can dream of far-flung places but B.C. has plenty of quickie getaways (you can drive and ferry to) that go the distance. Think low season to save big bucks. Weekend rates can be up to 30 percent lower. Because you only have two or three days, have a plan. Agree on a few must-dos so you don’t waste time wondering, “What should we do?” But don’t go overboard or you won’t relax.
