During my two days here, I stayed at the beautiful SookePoint Ocean Cottage Resort, built on cliffs above the Pacific Ocean in east Sooke. It was definitely a wow moment when I first entered my pet-friendly, cottage suite with a wall of windows looking out to waves crashing on rocks below. The view made me feel like I was on my own luxury cruise ship as I settled into a swivel chair and stared out to the sweeping view of Juan de Fuca Strait.

One of the major highlights of our fall travels has been spending more time on Vancouver Island. The island is so big and so beautiful, and we’ve still barely scratched the surface. On this trip we focused our travels in Victoria and Sooke, and we were completely blown away by the town of Sooke.

Sitting in comfortable armchairs with the floor-to-ceiling glass walls wide open, a gentle breeze blows through the suite. In front of us sits the deck – shaped like the bow of a boat – just 5 metres above the sea, and a wide swatch of glistening ocean and distant views of the US Olympic Peninsula spreads before us.

After landing in Victoria, picking up our rental car from National and making our way along the winding roads to Sooke, where my in-laws live, we decided to venture down to Whiffin Spit. It’s not far from my in-laws’ house and this would be my son’s first-ever chance to see the ocean. My husband and I have been to Whiffin Spit before, on previous visits with his parents, but my son, who is four, had been talking non-stop about seeing the ocean and collecting seashells.

British colonial energy with an island charm sets Victoria, British Columbia apart from any other city in North America.
